How to Lose the Baby Weight (Gym Optional): A Postpartum Guide

By Rachel · June 25, 2026 · ⏱ 4 min read

Losing the baby weight can feel impossible when you're running on no sleep, feeding a tiny human around the clock, and barely finding time to shower. I've been there. I gained 75 pounds during pregnancy and lost 80 pounds by 13 months postpartum β€” without ever stepping foot in a gym.

This is the exact, realistic approach I used (and now coach other mamas through). No crash diets. No bootcamps. No giving up dinner with your family.

Mama tip: If you just had your baby, give yourself the first month or two to rest, recover, and bond. There's no prize for rushing. Your body just did something incredible.

First, give yourself grace

It took nine months to grow your baby β€” it's okay if it takes a while to feel like yourself again. The goal here isn't "bounce back" by some arbitrary deadline. It's to lose the weight sustainably, in a way that fits your real life as a mom.

Aim to lose about one pound per week. That's slow enough to protect your energy, your milk supply if you're nursing, and your sanity β€” and fast enough that you'll see real change.

You don't need the gym

I lost all 80 pounds without a gym membership. Not because the gym is bad, but because as a new mom, the gym is one more thing. One more drive, one more hour away from your baby, one more reason to feel guilty.

What actually moved the needle for me:

  • Daily walks β€” with the stroller, around the block, anywhere. Movement you'll actually do beats the perfect workout you'll skip.
  • Staying active with my kids instead of carving out separate "workout time."
  • Treating exercise as a bonus, not the main event.

The truth most programs won't tell you: weight loss happens in the kitchen, not the gym.

What actually drives the results: how you eat

You can't out-walk your fork. Here's what worked, and what I teach:

1. Prioritize protein

Protein keeps you full, protects your muscle while you lose fat, and is especially important postpartum and while breastfeeding. Aim to build every meal around a protein source you enjoy β€” whatever fits the way you eat. A quality protein powder makes hitting your target easy, along with high-protein staples like tofu, beans, and lentils.

2. Eat enough β€” don't starve

Crash diets backfire. They tank your energy, wreck your mood, and (if you're nursing) can hurt your supply. We calculate a calorie target that creates a gentle deficit, not a punishment. You should be eating real, satisfying meals.

3. Keep it simple and repeatable

The fancy meal plan you can't keep up with is worthless. A few simple, high-protein meals on rotation β€” that you actually like β€” will beat a complicated plan every single time.

Mama tip: Lean on frozen fruits and veggies. They're cheaper, last longer, and turn "I have no time to cook" into a five-minute meal.

If you're breastfeeding

You can lose weight while breastfeeding β€” you just do it gently. Don't slash calories aggressively, keep your protein and water up, and aim for that steady ~1 lb/week. Many moms find nursing actually helps, but everyone's different, so listen to your body and your supply.

A simple plan to start this week

  1. Pick a calorie target that's a gentle deficit (our free calculator does this for you).
  2. Build each meal around protein β€” aim for around 30g per meal.
  3. Walk daily, even just 10–20 minutes.
  4. Drink water before you reach for snacks.
  5. Weigh in daily, but track your weekly average β€” the scale bounces around day to day, so your weekly average is the number that shows your real progress.

That's it. Boring on purpose. Consistency is the secret nobody's selling because you can't put it in a flashy ad.

You can do this, mama

I'm not special. I was a tired, overwhelmed mom who figured out a system that fit my real life β€” and the weight came off and stayed off. You can absolutely do the same.

If you want the whole thing done for you β€” a custom meal plan built around your numbers, weekly check-ins, and a community of moms cheering you on β€” that's exactly what I built Skinny Mamas for. πŸ’•
